Nursery Attendant

Summary       

Provide dependable, safe, secure, and nurturing care and formation to our children while the parents are at worship or other events in a clean environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience in caring for children between the ages of 0 to 5 with the ability to adapt and
  • interact with a variety of personalities and special needs.
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Satisfactory completion of background check
  • Completion of CPR training for infants and children.
  • Must adhere to St. Stephen’s Safe Church Child and Youth Protection Policy Guidelines
  • Must complete all Safe Church modules required for nursery workers prior to starting work.
  • Supply at least three references.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing age-appropriate care which includes:
    • Feeding
    • Changing diapers (Universal precautions should always be used while changing diapers or dealing with bodily fluids)
    • Escorting children to the bathroom
    • Maintaining a safe environment
    • Putting children down for naps
    • Holding children if needed
    • Sitting with and cheerfully interacting with children through games, stories, play, and prayer
  • Be polite, courteous, and friendly to all children, parents, and volunteers.
  • Arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the Morning Service. Childcare hours include every
  • Sunday (10:00a.m.-Noon). Depending upon the number of nursery staff available, the expectation is to work all Sundays even if a Sunday falls on a holiday unless otherwise discussed. You will have the option to work at other church events if available and interested.
  • Stay until children are secured with a responsible parent or adult.
  • In the event of an emergency notify the parent in person or via cell phone.
  • Straighten the nursery room and clean all toys and furniture before leaving the nursery. All toys that have had contact with saliva will require special attention with the
  • sanitizing solution available in the nursery.
  • Report any issues to the Rector, Vestry Advocate, Parish Administrator, or Director of Christian Education which hinder you from carrying out your duties or responsibilities.
  • Communicate in advance by phone to the Rector:
    • Any planned absences with an advance two-week notice
    • Any unplanned absences at least two hours prior to the shift

Employee Information

Hours: 3 hours per week on Sundays. Schedule to be determined in collaboration with the Rector. Additional compensated hours may be necessary during peak church holiday seasons or events.

Compensation range: $15 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Ministry Description

The Music Director is a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The purpose of this ministry is to nourish and strengthen the faith of our members, to assist people to express their faith and to help praise God through the medium of music.

Duties, responsibilities, and expectations

  1. Playing the organ for services requiring music, including
    • 10:30 AM Sunday services
    • Christmas Eve services (usually two)
    • Ash Wednesday evening service
    • Holy Week services: Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday
    • Easter Services (usually 2: Easter Vigil and 10:30 AM Easter morning service)
    • Special presentations with youth, children or adult that require an accompanying musician
    • Weddings & Rehearsals for members of St. Stephen’s
    • Funerals
  2. Directing the Chancel Choir and conducting midweek rehearsals (September- June) and on Sunday mornings.
  3. Scheduling special music (soloists, instrumentalists, ensembles, etc.) for Sunday worship and other times of the year as appropriate and feasible.
  4. Provide appropriate offertory anthems during summer services using organ, soloists, or small ensembles from the choir or congregation.
  5. Accompany Praise Choir (children’s) or Family and Praise choir (multigenerational) anthems during occasional services.
  6. Attending the following meetings as requested by the Rector: Staff meetings, Worship Committee meetings, annual retreats of the Vestry or Parish.
  7. Supervising the upkeep and maintenance of the organ, pianos, and other instruments of the church as may be used for worship.
  8. Work with music librarian to maintain the music library, as well as maintain compliance with copyright laws, keep licenses and memberships up to date.
  9. Secure a substitute organist/choirmaster during absences.
  10. Assist in the selection of music (hymns, service music, etc.) for all church services and related activities in coordination with the Rector.
  11. Participating in meetings with the Rector to review worship planning.
  12. Willingness to be open to the possibility of musical outreach and special music projects as appointed by the rector.
  13. Assist in the church budget process by submitting a music budget (providing any needed information on projected levels of music related expenses, instrument maintenance, music purchases, folders, robes, etc.)
  14. Willingness to use or develop skills needed for audio/visual technology and social media.
  15. Willingness to us Microsoft Suite products
  16. Encourage and mentor other music volunteers from the within the faith community

Equipment

  1. A baroque-style 1960’s Casavant pipe organ (two manuals and 17 ranks).  In 1995 five more ranks and a new conventional piston system were added.
  2. A 25 year old Yamaha Concert Grand Piano (refurbished 2019)
  3. Yamaha upright piano
  4. 2 octave Handbells
  5. Full-size electric keyboard.

Professional Requirements

  1. Experience in a liturgical church. 
  2. Knowledge of traditional and contemporary church music.
  3. Proficiency in organ performance
  4. Leading congregational singing with organ
  5. Directing choirs.

Hours of Work

Hours of work are 20 hours per week, typically Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday. Some flexibility on weekday schedule, some remote work possible. Annual salary of $20,000-$25,000. 

Background check and Episcopal Diocese of Virginia Safe Church training required.
