Need of the Week
The Culpeper Food Closet has been an outreach mission of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church since 1984. It actually began in a closet, where a few items were stored and were to be given out to folks in need. It grew to fill a Sunday school room, then a meeting room, and finally, in 2005, the church built a new building directly behind the original church and the entire first floor is now the Food Closet.

While St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church provides the housing for the Food Closet, Along with the equipment, management and many of the volunteers, food and other items provided come directly from community-wide donations. Our own parishioners and those of many other churches in Culpeper and nearby areas bring food collected at weekly services. We see daily donations of food and other products donated by local businesses or brought in by individuals. Schools, churches, clubs, and service organizations often run their own food drives or sponsor fund-raisers. We use monetary donations to purchase items not donated in sufficient amounts to meet the growing need for help. Because of this strong community support, we have been able to meet the need for help without any government funding.

If you are interested in becoming a food-giver volunteer, they are scheduled in 2-hour shifts, with 3 daily shifts Mon. - Fri. (shifts are 9 a.m. - 11 a.m., 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.) . We also use volunteers to substitute for people scheduled but temporarily unable to work, stocking shelves and picking up donations. Some training is required. Please contact us by phone and leave a message or email and we will return your call in a timely manner.
The Food Closet was formed in 1984. We offer food and some personal care items to residents of Culpeper who are in need assistance. We work closely with Culpeper Department Social Services, which supplies clients with vouchers to be used at the Food Closet..

We are currently having to purchase a lot of what we give out daily since donations are down. Please continue to donate food items.
